Pizza fanatics wanted

JOBURG - All aspiring pizza maestros are invited to take part in the next great Global Pizza Challenge.

The Global Pizza Challenge is run in 16 countries around the world and is designed to promote a passion for pizza-making and to introduce a whole new spectrum of innovative pizzas to the pizza-loving world.

The South African leg of the Global Pizza Challenge has started with a call for entries in four categories, chicken or meat, seafood, vegetarian and speciality or dessert. First prize for the overall pizza champion is R15 000.

Pizza makers in stand-alone pizzerias, restaurants, hotels or fast food outlets and franchises are invited to join the challenge and create delicious pizza recipes with a difference. Judges will deliberate on each pizza’s originality, balance, creativity and most importantly their excitement factor.

30 finalists will be selected and invited to recreate their recipes at the Global Pizza Challenge event to be held in a nail-biting cook-off at Hostex at the Sandton Convention Centre in March.

Pizza lovers are also invited to join in the fun by encouraging their local pizzerias to enter the challenge. If their nominated pizzeria wins the challenge, they will win a year’s supply of pizza.

Last year’s challenge winner was Colin du Plessis who comes from a small town in the Western Cape. His winning pizza consisted of roasted butternut, beetroot and garlic, sprinkled with sesame and pumpkin seeds and topped with rocket, avocado and smoked buffalo mozzarella and then finished off with a red grape balsamic reduction.
