More than 20 years of photo excellence

JOBURG - The Market Theatre foundation has been keeping a great secret from all aspiring photographers.

Situated in Joburg, not far from the Market Theatre, is a lesser-known facility that allows aspiring photographers to further their skills in the art – in the hopes of one day making a career from their passion.

The Market Photo Workshop was opened in 1989 by renowned photographer David Goldblatt, most famous for his portrayal of South Africa during apartheid.

“He saw a need especially in the black African market,” explained Tsakani Mangani, the public relations and media liaison at the Market Photo Workshop.

“Most communities didn’t know about photography or how to get into the field of photography. There was a time when we had street photographers who would take pictures in passing – like if a mother wanted a picture of their kids then they’d get someone to come in and take a picture, and David basically built on that and wanted to let people know that they can make a career out of that.”

The Market Photo Workshop provides students with an environment conducive to the study of photography in all its forms and also recognises that the industry and practice of the art is not easy on the pocket.

It is for this reason that they provide students with all the required equipment, as well as the facilities that will allow students to take their passion to the next level.

A school that was started for previously disadvantaged youth is now a place that welcomes all aspiring photographers.
