Pirates Half Marathon road race coming up

GREENSIDE - The Pirates Half Marathon road race will take place on 15 February at 6am at the Pirates Club in Greenside, with record prize money of R31 400.

“We look forward to making this the best Pirates 21km race ever in its 37-year history. The sponsorships of Complete Marathons, Casio and Sportsmans Warehouse add significant value to the race,” said Hennie Booysen, chairman of Pirates Road Running.

Pre-entries can be obtained at the Pirates Club on 14 February from 10.30am to 2pm, or at the Sweat Shop in Dunkeld Centre on Jan Smuts Avenue.

There is equal prize money for both men and women.

First prize has substantially increased to R4 500, while second place winner receives R2 500. There will also be cash prizes for the first male and female over 50 years and 60 years, the first junior male and female, and team prizes for groups of four runners. All finishers will receive a medal and will also be eligible to win spot prizes and other giveaways.

The race follows a circular route, running past the water tower on top of Northcliff Hill and back again.

The first half has three challenging hills, the first starting after 1km and then undulating with two more climbs. The last peak is the King of the Mountain point which is about 14km into the race.

The start and finish are at the Pirates Club, Braeside Road, Greenside. The cut-off of the race is three and a half hours.

The entry fee is R90 and late entries will be taken at the starting point at Pirates from 4.30am on the day. Temporary licenses will be on sale at the additional cost of R25. Runners are encouraged to enter online before the race.
