Update: Police investigate shoot out in Randburg

LINDEN - Police arrested a suspect following a shoot out earlier this morning.

UPDATE: According to Linden police spokesperson Constable Carol Mulamu, the incident began at 11pm last night, when Linden police conducting routine patrols identified three suspicious vehicles on the corner of 10th and Republic Road. When approached by police, the vehicles fled. Police called for backup from neighboring sectors, and chased one of the vehicles, a Volkswagen, to a metro police roadblock.

The vehicle sped through the roadblock and collided with a Douglasdale police van, which was offering support in the chase. According to Mulamu, the suspect was then apprehended and taken to Honeydew.Mulamu confirmed that shots were fired at police by the suspect, and that police returned fire. However, no injuries were reported.

The suspect will be charged with reckless and dangerous driving. The cause of the vehicles’ initial fight from police is still unknown, as no incidents were reported in the area in which they were first seen.

A dramatic shoot out took place in Randburg during the earlier parts of this morning.

It is believed that a silver VW Polo sped through a road block in Linden. Police then chased the vehicle to the Total petrol station at the corner of Malibongwe Drive and President Fouche.

The police managed to arrest the suspect at the scene after shots were fired at the garage.

It is believed that the vehicle is linked to several other robberies and the license disk expired in 2011.

According to an eye witness, Errence Malepe, he said, “I heard two gunshots fired at the petrol station and then saw the police searching the area, however, I did not see the arrest take place.
