Convicted ex-police commissioner Jackie Selebi dies
JOBURG – African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed the sad news of the death of former South African National Police Commissioner, Jackie Selebi.
ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe could not divulge any information about the cause and time. “I am not a doctor, I can’t have that kind of information,” was all Mantashe was prepared to say.
According to SABC news, Selebi died this morning. Selebi was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on 3 August, 2010 for taking bribes from convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti. He collapsed at his house in December 2011 after his final appeal failed.
He was released on medical parole in 2012 in a reportedly critically-ill state after the medical parole board on July 20 decided Selebi could be released because he was suffering from irreversible kidney failure, high blood pressure and diabetes.
At the time of his release on medical parole, the then-correctional services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele stated that Selebi was being sent home because his department had limited capacity to provide care for terminally ill patients. His sudden decline surprised independent doctors, who said kidney failure was a disease with slow progression.
