VIDEO: Jewellery store robbery creates concern

ROSEBANK - A recent surveillance video of an armed robbery of the Harris & D'arcy jewellery store in Cape Town as shifted the focus to security at malls.

On 11 January, a gang of armed men went on a rampage at the Blue Route Mall.

They entered the mall at around 12pm and chased away the mall’s many costumers before smashing the window display cabinets of the jewellery store.

The incident has called into question the safety at malls.

In August last year, at Rosebank Mall, two armed men held up a jewellery store at gun point and allegedly demanded the staff fill their bags with all the jewellery in the store.

Gaby Peters, marketing director at Rosebank Mall, has stated that the incident last year occurred during a phased opening before completion of the new Rosebank Mall.

“[Since then] we have since increased the number of cameras at our mall and have placed security more strategically inside and outside our mall,” she said.
