Woman mugged on Jan smuts Avenue

CRAIGHALL - A woman who was walking to The Valley Shopping Centre to meet up with her boss was attacked and robbed on Jan Smuts Avenue.

Lerato Motshwane explained, “I tried to make way for him because I was in the middle of the sidewalk talking on my phone. He grabbed my phone and started pulling my hair,” a shocked Motshwane explained, adding that she tried to fight back.

“I started pulling for my phone and was about to chase after him when I realised he had jumped into a car and sped off.” Motshwane added that there were three men in the car that sped off.

Another witness who saw what happened from the Caxton Community Newspapers Johannesburg North building explained, “I was sitting and working when I heard screaming. I looked out the window and I saw a woman fighting,” said Maryse Felix who works for Caxton Community Newspapers Johannesburg North in the accounts department.

An employee at Speedy Craighall Park who works across the road from where Motshwane was mugged said he did not hear anything, but saw Motshwane walking up with her hands on her head in distress. Another employee also from Speedy Craighall added that he saw a white Toyota speed off and tried calling Motshwane who continued walking.

“I Just heard screaming and saw a white car speed off,” said Sipho Mahlambe, an employee at Speedy Craighall.

Chubb response officer, Witness Jolingana, who also saw the ordeal, first thought the man and woman were a fighting couple. “I saw a man dressed in a white shirt and black pants. I first thought it was her boyfriend and that they were fighting,” he said.

However, he then realised what happened when the man ran off and jumped into the car and sped off. “I realised that the man was stealing from her,” said Jolingana.

Although he tried to chase after the vehicle, Jolingana was unable to retrieve the number plate as the traffic lights changed and he did not have a siren. Motshwane sustained no injuries.
