Rainy day for St Teresa Grade 1 pupils

CRAIGHALL PARK - St Teresa's school for girls was abuzz with little faces eager to learn and start their school journey. "We only have two Grade 1 classes which makes it easier for the girls to settle in," explained Lynne Elfick, principal of St Teresa's in Craighall Park.

The girls were already seated in class writing their names with play dough. “It is such an exciting and new adventure for the girls and all they want to do is learn how to read and write,” said Elfick.

Despite the rainy weather, all the Grade 1 pupils were thrilled to be wearing their smart new uniform and shiny shoes, and even looked forward to receiving homework. “The girls are so excited they even look forward to doing homework,” added Elfick.

“The theme for the school this year is L.O.V.E which is an acronym for Live Our Values Everyday,” she said.

Elfick explained that apart from equipping the pupils academically, the school aims to develop character in each pupil. “We aim to instil values to the girls, as they can take these values with them, and ultimately make them who they are.”

While some Grade 1 pupils were undecided about what they wanted to be when they grow up, others were more certain; “I can’t decide… at the moment I am thinking I want to be a baker,” said pupil, Tessa Welch. Working with animals topped the list with many of the pupils. “I want to be a vet because my cat died,” said pupil, Katherine Franklin.
