Veterinary clinic joins controversial outcry

ROSEBANK - Parktown North Veterinary Clinic puts up ‘SANTA IS REAL, ESKOM IS UNREAL’ billboard, in the wake of controversial Comedy Central, 'SANTA ISN’T REAL' board that sparked an outcry last December.

The Comedy Central billboard was put up on Witkoppen Road and read ‘SANTA ISN’T REAL – cheer up with Comedy Central.’ The billboard ignited a barrage of negative responses from outraged members of the community who felt the advert was in bad taste. Adding to this, Parktown North Veterinary Clinic has now put their own spin on the saga.

Their board was erected outside the facilities of the vet and could be seen by passers-by on Jan Smuts Avenue. Parktown North Veterinary Clinic manager Katy Lander said their billboard was the brainchild of veterinarian Peter Baker.

Lander said when they heard about the Comedy Central board they capitalised on the fact that they, like many, were still ‘pissed off” at Eskom after numerous load shedding outages experienced over the December period. Following a brainstorming session, they decided to put up a board with their own take on both Eskom and the Comedy Central matters.

In the past the vet has been known to put up equally bold boards. After an interview with Carte Blanche’s Derek Watts late last year in which the veterinary industry as a whole was painted in a negative light, the veterinary put up a board that read ‘DEREK WATT’S YOUR PROBLEM’.

As a result of their resent ‘SANTA IS REAL, ESKOM IS UNREAL’ board, the veterinary received an anonymous call from an unknown member of the public regarding the billboard. Lander said the caller said, “You tell Dr Baker to keep to what he knows and stop writing sh#t.”
