Mother threatens legal action after child’s death

PARKTOWN - Christa Tewitz, mother of seven-year-old AnnaMarie Tewitz who died at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital is seeking legal action against the institution.

Her daughter was diagnosed with cancer and reportedly received chemotherapy treatment at the hospital.

The cancer was in remission when AnnaMarie was readmitted to the hospital due to a brain tumour and passed away on 3 January.

Tewitz has claimed that neglect contributed to her daughter’s passing, and alleged in EWN media reports that AnnaMarie was not given food for three days prior to undergoing surgery.

She also claimed surgeons at the hospital did not attend to her daughter until she had made several complaints.

EWN reported that management at the hospital would not release the postmortem report for the seven-year-old girl due to doctor-patient confidentiality.

In an interview with Rosebank Killarney Gazette, Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Shadow MEC Jack Bloom, said the incident was shocking and horrific. “To hear that she was [starved] like that is very disturbing,” he said

“I hope it is not related to the shortage of staff at the hospital over the holidays.”

Bloom emphasised the need for an investigation into the issue and mentioned that he heard too many stories of a similar nature which have occurred at that hospital.

The Gazette is still awaiting response from management of the hospital, and has tried to contact the Tewitz family for confirmation. This is an ongoing story.
