Powercuts halt flights out of Durban

Holiday-makers returning to their home cities were stranded at King Shaka International Airport in Durban on 6 January due to power cuts.

According to a statement made by King Shaka International Airport, they are experiencing a problem with fuel. “As part of the contingency, we have issued a notice to all airlines to fuel their aircraft at their point of departure so that the aircraft will have fuel when departing Durban,” the statement read. “We are working closely with the fuel service provider Sky Tanking to resolve the issue which could take another few hours.” At this stage there are five aircraft on the ground that have been affected by the fuel problem, however the airport is hoping to normalise the situation within a few hours.

Mango Airlines tweeted that King Shaka was experiencing power outages, and this was the reason for the fuel problem. They apologised to customers and warned them to expect delays.

Complicating the wait for passengers departing Durban was the added issue that the airport experienced water outages on 6 January.

The airport said passengers and airport staff were issued bottled water for drinking when necessary while their fire department assisted with water from the fire truck so that restaurants could continue business and restrooms could be replenished with water.
