Cape Town wins top spot at global travel award ceremony
Cape Town has been ranked the best city by the UK’s Telegraph Travel Awards 2014, adding another of many international achievements to its mantelpiece.
Cape Town was among the round-up of 20 best cities around the world including Berlin, Hong Kong, New York, Sydney and Barcelona.
Cape Town’s surfing, mountain climbing and wine tours garnered it the winning post, as well as its role as 2014 World Design Capital.
Stellar accommodation settings such a Mount Nelson, Cape Grace and Cape View Clifton also boosted it to the top spot.
South Africa also featured in this year’s awards in the best country in the world category, but narrowly missed the top spot to New Zealand, setting as a runner up alongside the Maldives. Johannesburg has also featured in other international rankings, and both cities have always battled it out on the local competition front.
90,000 people voted for their favourite cities, countries and travel companies. In 2013, Cape Town beat Venice and Vancouver in the favourite cities category. The awards ceremony was held in London.
South Africans and other alike we quick to congratulate Cape Town on its achievement, and took to social media to send their good wishes to the city.
