68 percent of South Africans are holiday deprived

JOBURG - Are you holiday deprived?

A recent survey done by Pharma Dynamics has found that a staggering 68 percent of South Africans are deprived of holidays.

The study, conducted online over four weeks, has shown that 61 percent of South Africans will be taking less time off during the holidays this year as opposed to previous years.

This year it has been tallied that 86 million days of paid leave will go unused in the country, due to the decrease in time taken off during the festive season, with 46 percent of the working population only taking five days off.

Pharma Dynamics also revealed that 49 percent of the working population who will be taking a break for the holiday will still be attending to work emails and messages during that time.

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson of Pharma Dynamics, warns the working class that too little time off and not taking a proper break from work is detrimental for one’s health, mental well-being and relationships.

Pharma Dynamics found that 60 percent of those polled haven’t asked for more year-end holiday leave because work simply demands too much of their time.

It was also found that 26 percent complained that their leave allocation was the bare minimum and that they therefore have to be selective about taking time off.

Alarmingly, 14 percent said their employers discouraged them from taking more time off.

Those suffering from anxiety or compounded stress during the holidays can contact Pharma Dynamics’ toll-free helpline on 0800 205 026, which is manned by trained counsellors who are on call from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.
