UPDATE: Man caught dumping dead body into drain

JOBURG – Johannesburg Central police opened a murder docket after a man was caught dumping the lifeless and severely assaulted body of a man into a drain in Newtown.

UPDATE: 8 December 2014, 2:45pm –  According to police, the incident took place at the intersection of Carr and Central streets where the suspect was caught by police trying to dump the body into a storm water drain.

Johannesburg Central police spokesperson Xoli Mbele said the police were conducting their routine patrols in the early hours of Sunday morning when they were stopped by a motorist who said he had seen another man trying to dump something into the drain.

Mbele said, “Police caught the man in the act. The deceased was severely assaulted. He had several injuries to his upper body and had injuries on his head. He was beaten severely, but there were no signs of stab wounds.

“But police didn’t find anything that might have been used to assault him.”

Mbele said the deceased is estimated to be about 30 years old. Mbele stated that the 24-year-old suspect was expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of murder. He added that the police were still investigating the motive behind the murder as it was not clear what led to the murder.
