Santa’s got mail

MODDERFONTEIN - While bills and traffic fines may not get through the paralysed postal system this December, the Friends of Modderfontein Library are ensuring that nothing prevents Father Christmas from getting his letters.

In response to the protracted strike that tied up South Africa’s postal system for months this year, the Friends of Modderfontein Library undertook to guarantee the delivery of letters to Father Christmas. A clearly marked and brightly decorated box has been supplied at the library, and has proved popular with children who were anxious to ensure that their letters would reach Father Christmas in time.

There is no charge for postage, and letters will be sent on to Father Christmas’s office once the box has been cleared on 22 December. Children who still wish to post a letter are encouraged to pay a visit to the library before that date to make sure they will be delivered.

Many children took advantage of the year’s final story time session on 29 November to write their letters and entrust them to Santa’s postbox. Story time will recommence once schools open in the new year, and takes place between 10am and 11am on Saturday mornings. New readers are required, and anyone interested in exercising their storytelling skills is encouraged to contact the library.
