Neels Hansen memorial

HOUGHTON - A memorial for the stage director and costume designer Neels Hansen will be held in Houghton.

Hansen started in theatre as a teacher where he introduced many actors and designers to the stage. He soon started to concentrate on opera and it was in this genre that he received much acclaim.

Towards the end of his career he was justifiably acknowledged as a great director and also received many accolades for his costume designs.

Some of Hansen’s productions included Turandot, La bohème, La traviata, Cavalleria rusticana, I Pagliacci, Nabucco, Aïda, Rigoletto, Madam Butterfly, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Peter Grimes, Death in Venice, Maria Stuarda and I Puritani.

Before he succumbed to illness, Hansen was directing The Black Tie Ensemble.

Actress Sandra Prinsloo will host the memorial and introduce an intimate group of friends and colleagues including soprano singer Mimi Coertse, actress Maggie Beukes and the manager of Gauteng Opera Arnold Cloete.

After the ceremony Hansen’s ashes will be buried in the Foxwood Memorial Garden.

The memorial for Hansen will take place on 6 December at Foxwood, 13 5th Street in Houghton from 11am to 12pm.
