A grand old age of 101

LYNDHURST - Ron Smith Care Centre resident Winnie Raynham and her son Anthony Spence share a family tendency for longevity, with a collective age of 174 years.

Raynham, who turns 101 on 18 December, was born in Liverpool six months before the start of World War I. According to her son, who is 73 years old, Raynham has been in hospital only once in her life, in 1955. Spence’s own daughter, meanwhile, was once told by a psychic that her grandmother would live to 104 – a prophecy that seems likely to be realised.

In her younger days, Raynham was an active sportswoman, enjoying bowls, tennis, hockey and badminton. Now the oldest resident ever to grace the Rand Aid Association care centre, Raynham has two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

When asked for her comment on her great age, Raynham’s only response was, “Crumbs.”
