A swinging end to the year

LOMBARDY EAST - ANOTHER successful year with the Zamokuhle outreach programme was celebrated at Thembalami Care Centre.

The programme, which was started by Rand Aid Association’s Thembalami Care Centre in 2009, focuses on giving older persons from nearby Alexandra and River Park the chance to get out of the house and enjoy some social activities. Three times a week, beneficiaries spend a day in the company of their peers, learning a variety of handcrafts such as knitting and crocheting. They are provided with morning tea and lunch, as well as the benefit of various health and social awareness initiatives.

The year-end function took the form of a Christmas braai, organised by the Zamokuhle beneficiaries themselves and held at Gillooly’s Farm on 26 November.

“The gogos organised the event themselves and were really proud of their braaiing skills. Good fun was had by all,” said Thembalami social worker, Lara Hurwitz.

In order to continue their good work enriching the lives of the elderly and often disadvantaged, the Zamokuhle programme welcomes donations from the community, in the form of materials for arts and craft activities, or tea, coffee, sugar, milk, cake and biscuits.
