Miss Earth SA wins with a Vukani Awards design

JOBURG - Miss Green South Africa, Ilze Saunders, recently received a gold medal for the best national costume in the Philippines.

This came about when Saunders, and other delegates from more than 90 countries, participated in several environmental projects in the Philippines as part of a three-week programme.

The national costume section of the programme was intended to represent the women’s country of origin and was independently judged.

The dress was designed by Vukani Awards founder Sonwabile Ndamase. Vukani Awards recently hosted entrepreneurial and design courses in Braamfontein for up-and-coming designers.

Ndamase explained his partnership with Miss Earth South Africa, “Our relationship is a process of appreciation of what we each do in our separate fields. A costume that represents our nation must reflect what you envision and what you perceive to represent our nation.”

He added, “I look for inspiration and aspiration, I listen to the soul and then I create. I have ownership of the garment and my design, but I speak to your soul and so I create the garment.”

Executive directors of Miss Earth South Africa, Catherine Constantinides and Ella Bella, said they were honoured and humble to have received the medal for the third consecutive year.

“We pay tribute to our sponsors and those who have understood our objectives and supported our vision over the years.

“Congratulations to Ilze who did us proud and showcased this beautiful garment with pride and dignity.”

During her time in the Philippines, Saunders shared with her fellow delegates South Africa’s stand and objectives pertaining to sustainable tourism.

“Our country is rich in its natural heritage; South Africa is the third most bio-diverse country in the world,” she said before being awarded with the gold medal for her dress.

The international theme for Miss Earth 2014 was eco-tourism.

Miss Earth South Africa is endorsed both by the department of environmental affairs and the department of tourism.
