BREAKING NEWS: Acid attacker arrested in old age home

NORWOOD – Norwood police have traced and arrested the man who is accused of burning his ex-girlfriend with acid.

In the article Ex-boyfriend burns woman with acid, North Eastern Tribune, week ending 14 November, Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Nurse Sanyane said the woman was fighting for her life in an intensive care unit after her ex-boyfriend allegedly poured acid liquid over her, burning her face and body.

The incident took place at the corner of Pembroke Street and 9th Avenue, Sydenham. Sanyane said the woman was walking on the street when her ex-boyfriend charged towards her and poured the acid on her face and body. She said, “The liquid acid started on the face and fell down to her body which left her unconscious.” Sanyane said the boyfriend fled the scene.

Sanyane said the police had been following all the leads and managed to nab the suspect on 27 November.

She said, “The suspect was found sitting in a room in the retirement home where his father lives in 5 Bashees Street, Three Rivers, Vereeniging. The suspect is in the Norwood police holding cells and is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 1 December.” The suspect is charged for attempted murder.

On the day of the incident, the victim was rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Sanyane said the victim was later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto in a very critical condition.

However, in the IOL news, on 24 November, the employer named Jennifer* claimed that the Norwood police had done nothing, despite the fact that they had an address and cellphone number for the perpetrator, who continues sending SMSes telling the victim that he is going ‘to finish off the job’. But Sanyane refuted the claims and described them as ‘unfounded’. “We don’t know if the employer understands that police were never told about the text messages, or if it was just for news selling.”

This came after the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign for no violence against women and children with the theme ‘Count me in’.
