VIDEO: Police warn of festive season car jamming

HILLBROW – As the festive season looms, police have warned motorists to be very cautious as thieves are using numerous jamming devices to break into cars.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo stated that thieves use various remotes, such as universal remotes and ordinary gate remotes to block motorist’s central car locking systems.

In the video below, a woman is seen becoming another statistic of crime in South Africa, when a remote-jammer is used on her car and a man helps himself to her belongings in her car once she walks away.

He is also seen loitering around the car and opens the back door of the vehicle just as the woman exits her vehicle.

It is believed that this incident happened somewhere in Joburg, however, it is unclear as to where about it took place.

“Motorists, especially when they park in shopping centres or at a quick stop outside of a shop or house, must make sure that the doors to their vehicles are properly locked. They should physically test the doors to make sure the doors are locked by pulling the doors’ handles.”

Zondo added that some devices look like a small radio. He said a thief would press the jamming device before the driver presses his or her own remote, after he or she has parked the car.

He said police received numerous cases of theft out of motor vehicle by thieves who had used the jamming devices.

“Don’t move away from your car before you make sure the doors are properly locked otherwise you will lose your valuables in your car. We receive a lot of complaints from people who didn’t make sure that their cars were properly locked. Take all the necessary precautions before you leave your car,” Zondo advised.
