Joburg not featured on list of world’s most violent cities

JOBURG - Despite Johannesburg’s reputation as the country’s most dangerous city, it did not feature on a recent list of the 50 most violent countries in the world.

The mother city was ranked the 20th most violent city in the world and the most violent in Africa, recording an average of 50.94 homicides per 100 000 residents.

Nelson Mandela Bay, ranked 41st in the world with 35.76 homicides per 100 000 residents, which was the second most violent city in Africa.

Durban was Africa’s third most violent city with 32.42 homicides per 100 000 residents and ranked 48th globally.

The rankings did not include deaths in war zones or cities with unavailable data.

According to the report, Latin America was the most violent region globally; while the US was the only developed country with several cities on the list.

South Africa’s annual crime statistics released in September indicated that contact crimes including murder, attempted murder and robbery had increased by 0.5 percent from 617 239 to 620 366 incidents in the past year.

Murder increased from 16 259 to 17 068 equating to a five percent spike while attempted murder increased by 4.6 percent from 16 363 to 17 110 incidents.

Robbery with aggravated circumstances and common robbery increased by 12.7 and 0.6 percent respectively.
