Successful Regatta for Old Eds Boat Club

JOBURG - The Boston Head of the Charles River regatta attracted about 10 500 athletes and some 400 000 spectators who lined the banks of the river.

This is not only the biggest rowing event in the world, but one of the largest sporting events of any code.

At the Old Eds Boat Club’s 50th anniversary, members attended the event in Boston to add a little more noise.

They took three crews, which raced on both days of the regatta, and arrived for what was the only week of consistently good autumn weather that Boston had experienced in memory.

The mens eight of G Howarth, J Stillwell, P Smith, A Glover, K Thorneycroft, B Hart, G Stobie and M Aling, finished in 27th position out of a field of 47.

The club was surprised at the strength of this field and were happy with the finish.

The lightweight singles of Bruce Turvey, again in a strong field, finished more than a creditable 13th out of 25. Unfortunately Masters rower, Zak Wood, suffered an injury and although he did not compete actively, he did row the course.

Overall, the tour was highly successful thanks to the sponsorship of Grindrod Bank, and the kind hosting of the various rowing clubs in Boston.
