Safety tips for the community

ROSEBANK - Representatives from security companies, business establishments and the community at large met with Rosebank police on 13 November.

Through collective consultation and on the ground experience, Rosebank police along with security experts present would like to inform members of the public on general safety tips.

Taking note of the demands of the upcoming festive season, residents have been urged to remain vigilant.

Ettiennne Schaar from CSS Tactical wants to inform and remind residents who were ascribed to a security company that “meet and greet”services were available, subject to prior notice.

Should community members make a trip home carrying valuables that may put them at risk; they can be met by a security vehicle at their premises, to ensure safe access.

He also pointed out that it is vital that domestic workers and other staff be prudent to whom they allow in, particularly when home owners are not on the property. It is strongly advised that domestic staff need to verify in person, and directly with their employers, when strangers approach the house claiming to be an acquaintance of the residents.

Members of the local resident associations also wanted to put emphasis on the need to be particularly vigilant when opening and closing front gates and garage doors, as several robberies in surrounding suburbs were orchestrated by assailants slipping through gates. Residents Residents are advised to time how long it takes their front gates to close, as it is possible for perpetrators within 100m distance to enter a closing/opening gate within a 20 second span. Magnetic locks and extra brackets can be added to increase security of swinging and sliding gates.

It is also advisable that residents slow down and observe their surroundings, including the review mirror, before entering a property.

Furthermore, panic buttons and alarms should be tested weekly, with portable panic buttons being the most favourable to have.

When leaving for the holiday, it is also imperative that neighbours and the relevant security company be informed that the property will be vacant, should any incidents occur.
