Park gets a facelift

SANDRINGHAM - Dan Pienaar Park is due for an upgrade

The shady park, which is located along Sandringham’s busy George Avenue, has long been a source of trouble to local municipality, due to the high water table in the area, as well as the park’s position below a number of housing developments on the opposite side of George Avenue. Once a dam, and still frequently waterlogged with storm water runoff, the park is a pleasant green public space containing tennis courts, a children’s playground, and the successful Jabula Recreation Centre, which plays host to numerous community activities, from sports clubs to craft lessons.

According to Ward 72 Councillor Steven Kruger, long term hopes for the area include an upgrade to the dilapidated Sandringham Bowling Club, which he would like to see returned to the responsibility of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The present upgrade scheme, however, will provide the community with an outdoor gym, children’s playground and running track in the south-west corner of the park, as well as new benches on its wetter side. Work will start in mid-January 2015 and is expected to be complete within two months.
