Police nab armed gang

HILLBROW – Hillbrow Police Station Robbery Reaction Unit members nabbed what they believe were three would-be armed robbers.

Police also recovered four unlicensed firearms and live ammunition.

The incident took place just a few meters from the Hillbrow Police Station at the corner of Clarendon and Claim streets. Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mdududi Zondo said the police spotted a Toyota Tazz with three occupants who seemed to panic when they saw the police car driving behind them. “The men seemed to be trying to hide something and the police pulled them over. They (police) ordered the suspects out of the car,” Zondo said.

He said police searched the suspects and found two unlicensed firearms on one suspect and one firearm and live ammunition from each of the other two suspects. Zondo said, “One firearm had 14 rounds of live ammunition, one had 15, one had eight and one had seven which led police to believe that the suspects were planning a robbery.” He added that in three of the firearms, the serial numbers were filed off but one still had the serial number. Zondo said when the police checked it, they discovered the gun belonged to a security company. “We are investigating as to how the gun landed into the hands of the suspect,” Zondo said.

He said the suspects were aged between 28 and 33 years and were arrested and detained at the Hillbrow Police Station. They are expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
