Football club gets a hand

FAIRMOUNT - The Sandringham Women's Football Club has expressed thanks to Boston City Campus and Business College for the donation of T-shirts, but members say they are still desperate for help to fund equipment and transport.

At the end of a long day’s work, at least some of the domestic workers in Sandringham and the surrounding suburbs do not head straight for home.

Instead, they gather on a soccer field behind the Fairmount Bowls Club to catch up on each other’s news, enjoy a laugh together, and play soccer. Initially established as an exercise group for local domestic workers, the Sandringham Women’s Football Club is more than an opportunity to get fit, and a social circle that is like family. The women compete regularly in Gauteng’s Bagolobafitlile league, and recently won a Pretoria match against PVA 3-1.

Following a recent North Eastern Tribune article, meanwhile, the women have even more reason to celebrate. Inspired to lend the struggling club a hand, a reader at Boston City Campus and Business College donated several T-shirts, which the women wore with pride at a recent training session.

“Thank you, thank you, Boston!” said club spokesperson Rebecca Mathebula on behalf of her team mates.

However, the club remains in need of plenty of help, said Mathebula. The women are appealing for any assistance with training and ball skills, kits including boots, balls, socks, water bottles and carriers for matches. Above all, transport remains an enormous challenge. The club must often travel long distances to compete, and the women worry that they are unable to transport players to a clinic in the event of an injury.

Grateful for any assistance or support, the Sandringham Women’s Football club nevertheless continues, despite financial difficulty, to thrive on the energy and optimism of its tireless players.
