Protests at Joburg Zoo

JOHANNESBURG – ZOO visitors were greeted by the Ban Animal Trading Organisation as they entered the premises for the How'loween event on the weekend.

Johannesburg Zoo hosted a Halloween (or How’loween) event on 1 November. The public was invited to dress up in their scariest outfits and enjoy an evening of fun with Dora the Explorer, carnival rides and different ghosts and ghouls around every corner. And while the trick or treaters enjoyed their time in the zoo, the organisation gathered outside with signs on boards protesting the caging of the animals.

The ban animal trading group said, “Many, many people engaged with the protesters. We know that many hearts and minds were opened today.”

The protesters also dressed up in their scariest outfits – in true Halloween spirit. And they did not just stand outside the zoo with boards in hand, but also tried their utmost to educate zoo goers about the stresses and trauma felt by animals that are held in captivity.
