A woman is fighting for her life in an intensive care unit after her ex-boyfriend allegedly poured acid liquid over her, burning her face and body.

The incident took place at the corner of Pembroke Street and 9th Avenue. According to police, the woman was walking on the street when her ex-boyfriend charged towards her and poured the acid on her face and body. Norwood police spokesperson Nurse Sanyane said, “The liquid acid started on the face and fell down to her body which left her unconscious.”

Sanyane said the emergency services were called and the woman was rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. She said the victim was later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. She said the woman was in a very critical condition as she was in an intensive care unit. Sanyane stated, “The police are also waiting for her statement, but because of her condition now, she can’t even talk. We will wait until she is able to talk so that we can get her statement as to what exactly happened and why the ex-boyfriend poured the acid on her. At the moment we don’t know the cause of this.”

She added that the boyfriend fled the scene after his actions and he was still on the run. “We are still looking for him and we appeal to the public to assist the police with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrator,” Sanyane said.
