According to police the man was apprehended at the corner of Jolly and Bezuidenhout streets in Yeoville. Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the victim was walking home when she was approached by a man and threatened with a firearm.
Malatji said, “The suspect searched her and took her cellphone and other personal belongings. While the suspect was busy robbing his victim, police on patrol in the area noticed that something strange was happening between the two people and they stopped.”
When the suspect saw the police he tried to run away but he was apprehended. When the police searched him, police found the gun he used to rob the woman.
“The gun was found to be a toy gun,” said Malatji. He was arrested and detained at Yeoville Police Station and was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court facing charges of robbery.
