Patrollers reclaim London Road.

RIVER PARK - Anti-crime patrollers from River Park reclaimed the traffic lights at London Road and the off ramp to N3 freeway from the hijackers who used to terrorise the motorists.

Anti-crime patrollers from River Park have been successful in reducing hijack incidents at the London Road off-ramp from the N3 freeway.

This was announced by the Sandringham Police Station’s street patrollers co-ordinator, Warrant Officer Mohlaume Mamabolo at the patrollers induction.

He said, “The patrollers started about four months ago and their presence is felt already. They are helping the police in crime prevention in their area. We had a big problem of car hijackings at London Road, especially at the traffic lights next to River Park and the N3 off-ramp, but now that has decreased dramatically.” Mamabolo said the patrollers were very active which was a big boost for the police and crime prevention in the area.

An official of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Vuyokazi Notshoba, also attended the induction. Notshoba spoke to the patrollers about the rules and regulations for street patrollers.

“Remember you are not police,” she said. “Don’t put yourselves in dangerous situations. You are not there to make arrests but to be an eye of the police. Don’t beat up the suspects on the streets, report everything to the police.”

Notshoba advised the patrollers to stick to their allotted areas as they might not be covered by the department’s insurance in case of death or permanent disability.

She also donated four jackets to the patrollers from the department.
