Bafana Bafana captain shot dead

VOSLOORUS - Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa (27) was declared dead on arrival at hospital last night after he was shot by intruders during an attempted robbery.

Police confirmed that Meyiwa had been visiting a house in Vosloorus at about 8pm on Sunday night when two men entered the house. Meyiwa was shot but several other people inside the house remained unharmed. Following the shooting, the two intruders fled, along with a third man who had waited outside.

According to the Boksburg Advertiser, Meyiwa and six others were gathered at singer Kelly Khumalo’s house. Reports suggest that an altercation occurred after the intruders demanded a cellphone.

Police tweeted the details of the incident shortly before midnight on Sunday, and offered a reward of up to R150 000 for any information that might lead to the arrest of the intruders.

Social media and news headlines erupted with outrage over the incident.

Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza released a statement saying, “This is a sad loss which ever way you look at it – to Senzo’s family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation.”

“Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa. thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time,” tweeted Bafana Bafana team mate Dean Furman.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, meanwhile, stated that the Ministry would reach out to Meyiwa’s family and club before issuing a full statement.

Meyiwa has been hailed as a star player for Bafana Bafana in recent months, having captained the team in four African Cup of Nations qualifiers without conceding a goal. He played his last match on Saturday, when Orlando Pirates advanced to the South African League Cup semi-finals.
