Follow up on illegal establishments

GREENSIDE - Following the death of rugby player Thulane Popoyi at the Dollar Table nightclub, residents in the area are aiming to limit illegal establishments.

Though the incident happened in Melville, the Greenside Residents’ Association have decided to accelerate their efforts in dealing with similar establishments in their area.

Both Melville and Greenside are well-known residential areas that also have a diverse range of businesses clustered in their respective neighbourhoods, however some of these establishments have been known to trade illegally under false or incorrect permits.

Association chairperson Carol Millard, committee member Bridget Steer and Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe met with the Director of Enforcement and Compliance of the Liquor Board, Malebo Malebo on 13 October.

The group presented him with evidence that had been collected on various establishments in the suburb that had been trading illegally. They had received assurances from Malebo that full investigations would be conducted.

They will also approach the Department of Environmental Health and request an explanation as to why the two licenses for “places of entertainment” were issued when the Greenside node is in a middle of a residential suburb and is therefore not zoned for entertainment. There are plans to hold a public meeting for residents on Liquor Licences and the protocols they are putting in place for objection., A properly coordinated effort is required to ensure residents’ concerns are taken into consideration when liquor licence applications are assessed.

The residents association aims to get a better balance of businesses in the node, instead of a skewed representation of bars and clubs.
