Catch up with Dead Letter Circus

JOBURG - One of the things alternative rockers Dead Letter Circus are looking forward to about their upcoming South African tour is our food.

This will be the Australian alternative rock quintet’s second visit to the country.

Featuring Kim Benzie, Luke Williams, Stewart Hill, Tom Skerlj and Clint Vincent, the band performed two shows in South Africa last year.

Benzie has fond memories of his first visit to South Africa.

“The people and the general mystique of the place [were highlights]. It’s got a really intense feel to it,” he said.

“[We hope to see] more of the country… [And] you guys have amazing food too; way cheaper than in Australia.”

The band’s songwriting process is somewhat unique. Benzie will take a basic song structure he refers to as the “seeds of a song” into the recording studio, and from there, he and his band mates “jam around it”.

Everything is recorded, and the band then listens to the recording and pieces the song together from there.

Benzie said, over time, the process has been fine-tuned

“The [song] seeds are getting longer and more developed, and the jams are getting deeper,” he said.

“[These are] all good signs.”

Dead Letter Circus began their rise to rock prominence in 2007. Their bombastic, nuance style of music defied classification; something that listeners found both exhilarating and exasperating.

Still firmly entrenched within the alternative rock genre, their music also encompasses progressive and electronic rock.

They’re no strangers to an unplugged sound, however. The release of their second studio album, The Catalyst Fire, was followed up with the release of Stand Apart. This acoustic EP features six songs from their second album.

When asked what local fans can expect from their upcoming tour, Benzie’s answer was a simple one.

“Sweat and hyperactive rock,” he said.
