Blanket drive attempts to break record

NEWTON - Founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Carolyn Steyn and her knit-wits will attempt to break a world record.

Steyn launched the initiative in December last year and since then has attracted a global base of loyal supporters who Steyn refers to as the knit-wits.

“The 67 Blankets for Mandela Day started out as a small challenge between friends and it has now turned into a movement, and it’s been made possible through the goodwill of the people,” she said.

“After handing out the first batch of blankets on Mandela Day, we started collecting again, but this time our aim is to cover the Union Buildings in blankets and break a world record at the same time.”

Steyn’s aim is to collect 9 000 blankets through the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day.

“Airlink and Stuttafords van lines have come on as the campaign’s official sponsors.” She said the two companies would collect all the blankets made around the world and deliver them to the Union Buildings for the world record attempt.

“We are probably one of the few organisations without a bank account because we trade in ‘good wool’ – it is through the goodwill of the people who donate the wool for us to make these blankets that we are still able to go on,” she said.

Steyn challenged all South Africans to either knit a block or a blanket to donate to the cause.
