Outrage over You Magazine’s ‘bald’ celebs

The most recent issue of the You magazine, featuring a bald Leanne Liebenberg on the cover has caused readers to speak up about the poor execution of the celebrity photos for CANSA.

Lee-Ann Liebenberg, along with a number of South African personalities have caused a major stir with their ‘bald’ headed photos, which were taken in support of Cancer awareness, but were actually photoshopped.

The original idea behind an event like the Cancer Shave-a-Thon is to unite the public in support of Cancer awareness through the shaving of heads. In addition to this, the hair that is taken from the Shave-a-Thon is used to make wigs for Cancer patients who have lost their hair, in attempts to get them looking and feeling good.

The outrage comes from the fact that these celebrities have pretended to shave their heads and therefore do not stand for what it means to really have their heads shaved. Cancer patients also feel that it was a poor decision to go about showing their solidarity in this manner due to the fact that many Cancer patients are more traumatised by the loss of their hair than the actual diagnosis of the disease.
