MUST READ: Petrol bomb found at Orange Grove Post Office

ORANGE GROVE - A PETROL bomb was found at the Orange Grove Post Office as striking workers allegedly vandalised the building and tried to burn down the office building.

According to Norwood police spokesperson Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane, police were called after reports that a group of about 100 unruly strikers had gathered outside.

Tsoanyane said when police and the explosives unit arrived, they picked up a bottle filled with sand and petrol which is used as a petrol bomb.

She said, “When the manager got information that the striking workers were on their way to the premises, she informed the non-striking personnel to lock the building and vacate the area.”

According to Tsoanyane, the personnel hid outside the building. “They saw the strikers first having a discussion and later hurling stones and other objects at the building when they noticed that the gate was locked.”

Tsoanyane added that the manager and non-striking staff left the area. However, the manager was later called by another post office management team member to go back to the office to check the damage and report it. When the manager got there the striking workers had already left.

Tsoanyane said, “Upon her arrival, she saw broken windows, small burnt objects, burns marks on the wall and a burnt chair.” Tsoanyane added that the damages were estimated at R10 000.

No one was injured or arrested.

Tsoanyane appealed to the public to come forward with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
