A new place to park

GREENSIDE - Complaints have been raised about students from the Greenside Design College who allegedly park illegally on Greenfield Road.

Further concerns have been voiced about students who litter constantly and behave in a rowdy manner, disturbing the residents who reside in the vicinity. The college was founded in 1987, and is one of the oldest tenants of Greenside.

It has in total 300 students who attend classes in shifts, with about 100 students at the college at a given time.

Students are aged 18 to 23 and are consenting adults, though the administrators have urged them to be more contentious with regards to their conduct in the neighbourhood.

They have also provided students with rules of the road and parking stickers so their cars can be identified.

Desmond Laubscher, owner of the college, stated the college is committed to solving the problem. The area is already highly congested and having to bear the brunt of overload parking from the patrons of Greenway restaurants.

In order to relieve the over-crowding of traffic on the street, the college has arranged with the Pirates Sports Club that their students be allowed to park on their premises, however this agreement will only take effect next year.

Should college students choose to park inconsiderately, they are subject to punitive action by government authorities.

Ward councillor Amanda Forsythe further added that the soon-to-be expanded parking space will be used for students from the Carlton Hair Academy as well. The new parking space is in walking distance to both colleges.

However, resident Gilda Swanepoel stated it would be difficult to implement, and voiced concern that despite the potential parking space offered at pirates, it would be difficult to motivate students to park further away instead of directly on the street outside the college.
