Robbery at elderly couple’s Houghton home

HOUGHTON - An elderly couple, aged 80 and 81, were robbed in their home on 3 October in Houghton.

Three assailants allegedly broke into their property at around noon on 3 October and assaulted the elderly man. The suspects cleared out the safe and stole a TV.

The elderly man sustained moderate injuries on his head and neck, which required medical attention, while the elderly woman was unharmed.

The couple were not registered with an armed response company, but managed to alert the police during the incident. They allege that it took more than 45 minutes before officers from the Hillbrow police station arrived.

Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, spokesperson for the Hillbrow police station, acknowledged that they were investigating three other similar cases of house robberies in the area. They stated that within a week, they had arrested four suspects and obtained surveillance footage of their get away vehicle.

Unfortunately the couple were unable to identify the suspects in an identity parade and there was insufficient evidence for the case to proceed to court.

Police also noted the license plate on the suspects’ car was cloned.
