JUMA attracts thousands of cyclists

EMMERENTIA - The premier event of the Johannesburg Urban Mountain Adventure (Juma) took place on 12 October.

More than 5 000 cyclists participated in a unique and challenging course built around Johannesburg.

The race was spilt between 22km and 52km options, and included two short children’s races to keep the whole family occupied. The theme this year was ‘nuclear apocalypse’ which saw some riders dress up in zombie costumes.

The event was organised by Adreach in partnership with the City of Joburg and City Parks. The course was varied in terrain and included a diverse combination of flat road surfaces and some challenge elements which took cyclists through parks, storm water tunnels, golf courses and miniature rapids.

The race started and finished at Marks Park, with a route that guided participants through several of Johannesburg’s suburbs including Parktown North, Craighall Park, Hurlingham, Bryanston, Strathavon, Wierda Valley, Inanda, Houghton Estate and Cotswold.

One of the main aims of the event was to get people to explore and discover the city they live in. Most cyclists limit themselves to a certain path, whereas the Juma combined unusual and lesser travelled cycling terrain throughout the city in a single route.

“I really wanted people to become more aware of just what Joburg has to offer, and with so many unexplored areas, what better way than to have a cycle race right through them”, said Adreach’s Mark Castell.

The race was a culmination of months of planning, and employed the use of 112 security guards, 85 marshals and various medical staff on standby.

The organisers have plans to replicate this event in South Africa’s other major cities including Durban and Cape Town.
