Wits paediatric fund hosts carnival ball

ILLOVO - NOT all children are fortunate enough to have healthy and carefree childhoods, in Gauteng province alone it is estimated that more than 80 percent of sick children are cared for in the public sector.

The Wits department of Paediatrics and Child Health is made up of a dedicated team of doctors and nursing sisters who tend tirelessly to the needs of their young patients across three of Wits academic hospitals.

The Chris Hani Baragwanath, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child hospitals are integral in providing healthcare services and cater to thousands of the province’s children on an annual basis. Many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds and would not be able to access these services in the private sector

The Wits Paedatric Fund (WPF) was founded to provide financial assistance to these units in order to cover the expenses of specialised medical treatment that cannot be supported by government funding alone. The WPF raises money to improve the quality of care provided to young patients and their families by upgrading facilities and enhancing staff support.

The Wits Paediatric Ball held on 11 October at the Wanderers Club is one such fundraising event, bringing together celebrities and medical staff to raise awareness and garner sponsorship for the cause.

Dr Daynia Ballot, chairperson of the WPF, informed attendees that proceeds for the evening were dedicated to the improvement of the renal unit for children who require kidney operations.

This year’s theme was carnival, and saw some guests dressed in flamboyant feathers and outlandish accessories emulating the flair and eccentricity that can only be found at a mardi gras.

The event was organised by Edith Venter, hosted by radio personality Sureshnie Rider while PJ Powers entertained the audience with old-school classics.

Guests participated in lively bidding for items ranging from plane tickets to spa treatments, in addition to offering individual donations to the WPF.
