Joburg Zoo to address suspention

SAXONWOLD – Joburg Zoo will address the media to provide clarity on the suspension of the zoo’s accreditation with the Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

On 8 August, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported that the zoo was saddened after eight sitatunga antelope were humanely euthanized after they had gone through three checkpoints in Europe and come into South Africa without the necessary medical clearance certificates.

On 5 September, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported that Joburg Zoo had appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) to investigate who was liable for allowing the antelopes into the country without the necessary clearance certificates.

The zoo’s accreditation with the association has since been suspended. A media briefing will be held at the zoo on 13 October.
