Security guard robs stokvel members

YEOVILLE – Swift reaction by the Yeoville police has led to the arrest of a security guard who allegedly robbed stokvel members of R18 000.

According to police, the incident took place at a block of flats on the corner of Page Street and Fortesque Road.

It is alleged the victims were in a business apartment collecting stokvel money from all members when four men armed with firearms entered the apartment and threatened them.

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the suspects took R18 000 from the victims and left the scene.

Malatji said, “The victims went to inquire from the security guards in the same building about the suspects and the security guards told them that the suspects asked to look for a place to stay.” The victims reported the incident with the police. A docket was registered and the police started the investigation immediately. Malatji said, “The investigation led to the arrest of one suspect who is a security guard at the same building.” He said the suspect was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon. Malatji said police expect to make more arrests soon.
