Homeowner tackles suspect found on property

EMMARENTIA – An attempted house robbery was brought to a halt when a homeowner ‘rugby tackled’ a suspect to the ground after finding the man at their Emmarentia home.

Police said the couple had just arrived home when they found the suspect on their property. “The suspect placed his hand on his waistline, concealing it under his jacket in a manner that suggested he had a firearm,” said Parkview police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha.

The 34-year-old suspect ordered the couple to sit against a wall and allegedly threatened to shoot them if they did not cooperate. “The suspect tied the husband’s hands with shoe laces, and in the process the husband noticed the suspect was not armed,” added Ramovha.

The husband managed to foil the robbery attempt when he launched a rugby tackle on the suspect and a tussle ensued, which resulted in the suspect being knocked out unconscious. Police were called to the scene and the suspect was arrested and taken to Helen Joseph Hospital for treatment.

On 26 September, the suspect was remanded in custody after appearing in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court. He is expected to reappear in court soon.
