Alleged murder of Pirates rugby player a shock to club

GREENSIDE - The death of Pirates rugby player, Thulani Popoyi has shocked the sports club's management and his friends.

Northcliff Melville Times reported on the 29-year-old’s alleged murder on 7 October.

Police are investigating the apparent murder of Popoyi after he was found dead on 5 October at the Dollar Table in Melville.

The chairman of the Pirates rugby club, Brad Guymer said, “Thulani was an outstanding player, had a big personality and was always quick to crack a joke. He will be missed.”

Former Pirates player and friend to the deceased, Menzi Ngidi said he knew Popoyi from rugby and developed a friendship with the player after a short time.

“I met him at Pirates a few years ago and he was always a joker and had stories for days,” he said. “It still comes as a shock to hear that he’s gone.”

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungile Dlamini confirmed that the Dollar Table owner had been arrested, but could not reveal his identity until he appeared in court.

The owner of the bar is to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 7 October in connection with the alleged murder of Popoyi.
