Landlord’s boyfriend assaults tenant

NORWOOD – A MAN was arrested after he allegedly assaulted and insulted a female tenant in his girlfriend's building.

According to the complainant, the problem began when she was in her room. Her landlady’s boyfriend gave her a set of keys for her room and informed her that he does not want the complainant’s domestic worker or her friend to gain access to the yard. The accused allegedly also told the complainant that he would include the cost of the keys in her rent.

The complainant allegedly told the boyfriend that he could not add more money for keys to her rent. She claimed the man then threw keys on the floor and told her to pick them up.

Norwood police spokesperson, Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said the complainant refused to pick up the keys. Tsoanyane said, “The suspect started to insult her using a derogatory racist term and then assaulted the complainant, punching her on her head and shoulders, and kicked her in the stomach.”

Tsoanyane said the suspect also insulted the complainants’ friend, using the ‘k’ word. She reported the incident to the police and the suspect was later apprehended by the police.

The 28-year-old was expected to appear in Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of common assault and crimen injuria. Crimen injuria is a crime under South African Common Law, defined to be the act of “unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another”.
