Celebrating 50 years of music

UPPER HOUGHTON - ST JOHN'S College commemorated the 50th anniversary of their chapel organ.

On 15 September 1964, the chapel organ was first used in a service and was fully completed by October of that year. It was dedicated by the Bishop of Johannesburg in February 1965.

The college marked the occasion with a simple service of re-dedication presided over by Friar Jaques Pretorius.

The boys sang one of their favourite hymns, Bring to the Lord a glad new song with great enthusiasm. Stanford’s setting of Psalm 150 preceded the blessing of the instrument, and a prayer of re-dedication.

The liturgy concluded with the school hymn and a rendition of Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 was played by Cameron Upchurch.

St John’s College’s media liason, Cailin Wandrag said, “We are grateful for the service rendered to this community by this impressive instrument, and look forward to 50 more years of unstinting service from its thousands of pipes.”
