Police nab car jamming suspect

ROSEBANK – A remote jamming suspect operating in the Joburg Zoo area was arrested by Rosebank police after being caught trying to open the door of a vehicle.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the suspect had been posing as a car guard when a vehicle parked at the zoo. Mdletshe said the owner locked his vehicle and walked away, but turned around and saw the suspect trying to open the door of his car. The owner shouted at the suspect to stop what he was doing.

Two security officers who arrived at the scene recovered a jamming device from the 28-year-old suspect and called police who arrested him. The suspect appeared at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody.

Remote jamming is widespread and suspects monitor motorists in parking lots. As a motorist presses the lock button on their remote control to lock their car, the jammers press their own remotes which operate on the same frequency. The signal gets jammed as a result, which prevents the car from being locked.

Mdletshe encouraged motorists to be vigilant and exercise necessary precautions to avoid falling victim.
