World War II veterans recognised

SAXONWOLD - The annual lunch of the Transvaal Scottish Regimental Association was held at the Ditsong National History of Military History in Saxonwold on 27 September.

Four World War II veterans were in attendance.

Stan “Titch” Kegel fought with the third Battalion and taken as prisoner of war at Sidi Rezegh. He was then held in Italy and Germany before being released by the Russians.

Eric Yoko(91) was a ground controller in North Africa and Italy with the signal services, and was a radar expert.

Jac Geldenhuys(95) whose father signed him up, a year before he was eligible, spent most of the war in North Africa, and was commanded by not only Field Marshal Montgomery, but also Field Marshal Jan Smuts.

Mike Holm(85) was too young to see active service, but joined the navy in Simonstown.
