Killarney gets Blue Plaque status

KILLARNEY - One of Killarney's oldest buildings, Daventry Court, was officially marked as a landmark on 28 September.

The building located on a block surrounded by Riviera Road and 4th Street turned 80 last year and obtained a heritage Blue Plaque this year.

According to one of the building’s residents, Boris Gorelik, Daventry Court was probably the first multi-storied block of flats erected in Killarney in the 1930s.

“Daventry Court is not only one of Johannesburg’s most beautiful buildings, but it’s the first modern block of flats in Killarney designed by Leopold Grinker, a legendary Art Deco-era architect,” he explained.

Gorelik recently released 80 Years of Daventry Court where he provides the history of the building and an account of growth and change in Killarney; and highlights the significance of the iconic building.

The building has been home to world famous children’s books author, Beverly Naidoo; One of South Africa’s best female bowls players, Sylvia Dyne and Lieutenant general George Edwin Brink (1889-1971) who is described as South Africa’s second most important leader during World War 2; and many other prominent South Africans.

The plaque was unveiled by David Grinker, the son of architect Leopold Grinker..
